The annual Whitgift House Residents vs John Whitgift Foundation Governors croquet match traditionally marks the end of the summer season. A highlight of the calendar, this year’s fixture was no exception.
Residents took on a team captained by Juliet Jukes, alongside other current and emeritus governors and the Foundation’s CEO, Roisha Hughes. The Whitgift House team had put in plenty of practice on the lawn and were determined not to let their title slip. The weather played along beautifully. Shots were met with cheers and points were fiercely contested.
After a nail-biting afternoon that went right down to the final hoop, the residents held their nerve and came out on top, lifting the trophy once again to huge celebration. The visitors accepted their defeat with good grace.

Juliet Jukes, who joined the Foundation’s Court of Governors last year, said: “Competitive spirit was alive and well. As the visiting team, we had many disadvantages – questionable skill being one of them! We got into our stride, but on the day, our enthusiasm wasn’t matched by our ability, and the right team won.”
Beyond the fun and friendly competition, days like this remind us how much staying active benefits our residents. Croquet keeps hand-eye coordination and balance sharp, while the buzz of a match brings people together in a way that’s every bit as good for the mind as for the body.
Of course, no afternoon on the lawn is complete without a well-earned treat, and everyone tucked into fish and chips from CB Sezen Fish Bar to round off the celebrations.
Our thanks go to Foundation governors past and present, the event organisers, and the enthusiastic spectators who made the day so special. Particular recognition goes to Ian and Jill Proctor, Whitgift House’s tireless and dedicated volunteers who are such an important part of activities like this.

Proud winners
