Four properties in Croydon owned by the John Whitgift Foundation have been let to new tenants, generating income that will support the Foundation’s bursary programme and sheltered accommodation for older people in the community.
Properties on North End and George Street have been leased to three businesses: Holland and Barrett, Tooth Club, Shah’s Halal Foodstalls, and Soul Purpose, a not-for-profit organisation.
Reinvesting rental income
The successful letting of these properties is part of the Foundation’s centuries-long mission to serve local residents. Rental income is reinvested into the Foundation’s charitable work, including bursaries for talented young people who would not otherwise be able to afford to attend its schools and the provision of almshouses in central Croydon:
- In the 2024/25 academic year, 318 pupils across the Foundation’s schools received fee assistance in the form of bursaries. An additional 59 pupils at external schools also benefited from the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to support former Old Palace students.
- Steeped in history, the Whitgift Almshouses are located in the heart of Croydon’s town centre. Residents aged 60+ enjoy supported independent living in self-catered sheltered housing that overlooks a tranquil private garden.
Community benefits
Roisha Hughes, CEO of the John Whitgift Foundation, said: “These new lettings enable us to continue our support for those who need it most. Money generated from our property portfolio supports education and enhances the quality of life for older members of our community.”
The new lettings represent positive investment in Croydon itself. Well-maintained, occupied buildings benefit everyone in the community, while the Foundation’s reinvestment of rental income creates a cycle of charitable support that benefits people in Croydon and beyond.
The John Whitgift Foundation has been active in Croydon for more than four hundred years. The organisation remains committed to working with local residents, businesses and not-for-profit groups, and welcomes ongoing engagement about its work in the community.
